Karnataka to Mandate e-Khatas for Property Registration Starting September 30

Bengaluru: To combat illegal and fraudulent property transactions in Karnataka, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda announced that e-Khatas will become mandatory starting September 30. This system is currently in place in approximately a dozen districts, including Chitradurga, Raichur, Bagalkot, and Chamarajanagar, under the E-Swathu initiative for rural property registration. In urban areas, properties are registered using the E-Aasthi system in pilot districts.

Minister Gowda urged property owners to secure their e-Khatas before engaging in buying or selling real estate, as registration will not be permitted without them. e-Khatas can be obtained from local authorities—gram panchayats in rural areas and urban local bodies in cities like Bengaluru. The minister emphasized that the e-Khata system aims to protect citizens from fraudulent dealings, as there have been cases of properties being registered multiple times under different names.

Additionally, the state government is accelerating the digitization of land records, known as the Podi drive, which began in Hassan district. So far, the Revenue department has assessed 8,279 government survey numbers and aims to benefit approximately 400,000 farmers statewide. Another 22 lakh private survey numbers, categorized as multi-owners, also need to be included in this digitization effort.
